Usually, it’s a thick green and yellow wire clamped onto a copper pipe. To the untrained eye, it looks like a bit of a random addition, but in the world of electrical safety, that little wire is doing some heavy lifting.
We’ve had a busy few weeks helping homeowners across the area, and one thing that comes up often is what we call "equipotential bonding." Now, that’s a bit of a mouthful, isn't it? Johnny The Hat here prefers to talk about it in terms of "potential": specifically, making sure everything in your home is at the same electrical potential.

The "Bird on a Wire" Mystery
To understand why we bond copper pipes, we first have to look at birds. Have you ever noticed how a bird can sit quite happily on a high-voltage power line without getting a shock? They look perfectly relaxed, chirping away while thousands of volts run right under their feet.
The reason they don’t get fried is all about "potential." Because both of the bird's feet are on the same wire, the bird is at the same electrical potential as the wire. Electricity wants to move from a high potential to a low potential (like water flowing downhill). Since there is no difference in potential between the bird's left foot and its right foot, the electricity has no reason to travel through the bird. It just stays on the wire where it’s already moving easily.
However, if that same bird had one foot on the wire and somehow managed to touch a different wire or the metal pylon (which is connected to the ground), it would create a path for the electricity to flow. That difference in potential would be fatal.
In your home, we want your appliances, your taps, and your pipes to act like that bird on a single wire. We want everything to be at the same potential so that electricity never decides to use you as a shortcut.

The electricity will flow through you to get to the earth, resulting in a nasty, and potentially life-threatening, shock.

What is Equipotential Bonding?
In simple terms, bonding is the practice of connecting all the metal parts in a building that could potentially carry electricity to the main earthing terminal. This usually involves running a thick copper cable from your consumer unit (fuse box) to your gas and water service pipes.
We use specific clamps to ensure a solid connection. You might have seen these: they usually have a small metal tag that says "Safety Electrical Connection : Do Not Remove." If you see one of these tags hanging off or a wire that’s come loose, it’s a sign that your home’s safety system is compromised.

When we carry out electrical repairs or upgrades, checking this bonding is one of the first things we do. It’s a crucial part of home safety. If your house was built or rewired a long time ago, the bonding might be undersized or missing entirely. Modern standards require a much thicker cable than what was used 30 or 40 years ago to ensure it can handle the current of a major fault.
The Role of the Earth Rod

The earth rod provides a physical connection to the literal earth.
